List of health problems because of obesity Obesity is due to eating too many calories and not enough physical activity to burn those calories. excess calories are deposited in the body as fat.
Obesity increases the risk of several health problems like high blood pressure insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, gout, gallstones, colon cancer, sleep apnea and non-alcoholic fatty liver.
Hypertension:
Blood vessels carry blood from the heart to the organs of the body and return to the heart. The blood vessels have thick walls, but elastic proper blood circulation. Decreased elasticity of the arterial wall increases pressure on blood passing through these vessels. Obesity decreases elasticity of blood vessels causing increased blood pressure.
Diabetes obesity
Insulin is necessary for the entry of carbohydrates in the blood cells. Carbohydrates in the cell is used for energy production by the cells. deposit excess fat in the body causes insulin resistance, because of which, insulin can not perform its function and sugar can not enter cells and remains in the blood. This leads to diabetes or hyperglycemia. high blood sugar leads to complications in various organs such as kidneys, eyes, blood vessels, and heart.
Atherosclerosis or fatty deposits in blood vessels:
Obesity is associated with increased levels of bad cholesterol in the blood. Increase cholesterol in blood causes atherosclerosis or deposition of cholesterol on the walls of blood vessels. Atherosclerosis reduces the elasticity of blood vessels, blood vessels and reduces blood flow in these vessels. All these changes lead to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
Heart disease:
Coronary arteries are blood vessels that supply the heart muscle. Atherosclerosis or fatty deposits in coronary arteries in obesity decreases blood supply to the heart muscle. Decreased supply of oxygen and blood flow to the heart can cause angina (chest pain) and complete blockage of blood flow to the heart can cause a heart attack.
Stroke or paralysis:
Atherosclerosis in the arteries of the brain can reduce blood supply to the brain. This decrease in blood flow can cause strokes or paralysis.
Arthritis:
Obesity and overweight increases the load on joints like the knee, hip and lower back, which can cause the deterioration of cartilage in the joint. Cartilage is a cushion like structure of a joint necessary for smooth movement of joints. Breakdown of cartilage in obesity results in pain and stiffness and other characteristics of osteoarthritis.
Taste:
A type of arthritis caused by accumulation of uric acid crystals in joints. Obesity is associated with an increased accumulation of these solid-like crystals in joints, causing inflammation and pain.
Sleep apnea:
Overweight and excess fat around neck causes narrowing of airways and leads to sleep apnea. In sleep apnea, snoring heavily and person stops breathing for short periods, which results in frequent awakening during the night.
fatty liver disease:
Obesity increases the risk of developing liver disease called fatty liver due to accumulation of fat in the liver.
disease of the gallbladder and gallstones:
Obesity increases cholesterol deposition in gall bladder, which can lead to the formation of gallstones.
Thus, obesity can cause many health problems and other complications. For more information on the role of carbohydrates and management of obesity, please visit
