Causes Of AnaemiaAnaemia: causes, symptoms and treatment

What is anemia?

Anemia is derived from a Greek word meaning "without bloodshed." It is a condition that there is a shortage of red blood cells or hemoglobin. This leads to a lack of oxygen carrying capacity of the body.

The three main types of anemia are:

1. Or excessive loss of blood, known as bleeding.

2. Excessive destruction of blood cells called hemolysis

3. Inadequate production of red blood cells called haematopoisis.

To produce red blood cells, the body needs vitamin B12, iron and folic acid, among other things. If there is a lack of one or more of these substances, anemia develops.

Anemia is not a disease in itself. This is not only due to iron or vitamin deficiency. It may also be due to a chronic disease or a genetic or acquired (such as thalassemia or sickle cell anemia). It may also be a side effect of medication such as anti-biotic or anti-coagulants.
