Chest pain is not only a problem for adults. It can also occur in a child. It is rarely due to heart disease. Chest pain is the presenting complaint in 6 per 1,000 children. Chest pain has a variety of sources, and virtually any structure in the chest can cause pain. This includes the lungs, the ribs, the muscles of the chest wall, diaphragm, and the joints between the ribs and sternum. Injury, infection or irritation of one of these tissues may be responsible for chest pain. The most common source of chest pain in children is "musculo-skeletal disorders. The chest wall has numerous ribs and each of the ribs join the breastbone at the front of the chest by joints. Each side also has three sets of muscles associated with it. Chest wall pain is usually described as sharp or stabbing.

There are reasons rare cases of noncardiac chest pain. These include sickle cell anemia, pneumothorax, pneumonia, asthma and rarely thoracic tumors such as lymphomas. Heart failure is a rare cause of chest pain in children. Children who have severe, persistent cough, asthma, pneumonia, or may complain of chest pain due to overuse of the muscles of the chest wall. Some children may complain of chest pain with exercise due to exercise-induced asthma. Stress or anxiety can precipitate chest pain in boys and girls. Gastroesophageal reflux is more likely to occur if your child was lying. Injuries to muscles and bones of the chest wall may have several causes. Some are obvious, as a direct blow during a sporting event or a fall. Other less obvious causes including lifting heavy objects.

Acid reflux can cause pain in the chest or stomach. It sometimes appears as a burning sensation below the breastbone. Chest pain can be accompanied by an irregular heartbeat or pounding, dizziness, which is aggravated by exercise, and that can cause fainting. The heat and a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen, may help relieve symptoms. Do not give aspirin to your child without first consulting your doctor. Apply local heat for 20 minutes four times a day. Use a heating pad or warm washcloth area.Daily, gentle stretching of shoulders and chest wall in the playoffs 10 times a day can prevent the recurrence of chest pain. Stretching exercises can be continued even during active chest pain. Avoid that increase the pain.
