Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust

Posted on March 4, 2010.
Cystic Fibrosis Research TrustWhat can I do if I have cystic fibrosis and I want to join the army??? particularly the U.S. Coast Guard ...?

After I graduated high shool provided I approached the U.S. Air Force recuriter and requested information to enlist. I admired to be part of the U.S. military since I was young. The Air Force and Army Air Core, has known my family for several generations, so my initial interest has been triggered. I did research academies and my first choice was the Air Force Academy. I had the academic excellence, volunteerism (Civil Air Patrol), and the ablility to pass the test of fitness. I was well on my way to joining the Air Force Academy. I received a phone call from the admissions officer of the Air Force Academy relaying my nomination has been rejected because of my chronic illness. Their reasoning was that if I had to be shipped overseas and get sick, I can be considered a liability, not an asset to the Air Force.

Contained in their justification, then I came to the conclusion that maybe I could stay state side and still serve my country. What better place to do that the U.S. Coast Guard. I have applied to their academy, I'm all for medical examination, where I was again permanently disqualified because of my chronic illness, cystic fibrosis.

Was three years ago. Academies to accept applicants up to age 23 years. So I was wondering if there was someone there who knew where to go from here. I always want to serve, but nobody seems to want me because of my very mild case of cystic fibrosis. Since graduation, I was subsequently refused U.S. Foreign Service (Business counsular aka working in an embassy of the United States), the NSA and the FBI. None of the above services academies or even gave me the chance to do the fitness test, I know I can pass.

Thus, I have some questions,
- What can I do to serve my country and not be stuck behind a desk all day?
- Is there an organization that does not disqualify people for cystic fibrosis?
- And why not the United States seem to want me?

I know I'm probably a little biased in my representation of events. Also, it seems to be far off. It was sugessted by a trusted friend that I take him to court, but I just did not have the money or time to engage in such business.

be free to leave your opintion even if you do not answer my questions Feel.

Thank you all.

God bless America

You can not join a branch with cystic fibrosis. You can see if you can volunteer for axillary Coast Guard. It's like the Civil Air Patrol - strictly voluntary and no compensation - but there are many different people of different ages who serve. The only drawback is that you have to live near a reserve center for the Coast Guard. There is one located in Pittsburgh and Lake Erie. Check around and see if there is one for you.

I am sorry to say this, but a chronic illness will automatically disqualify it does not matter which service you join. I'm in the Coast Guard and if all of a sudden I developed a chronic illness, I am medically discharge course, they will not let someone who has a chronic illness. In the Coast Guard we also get deployed, not abroad, but must be deployable and with something like cystic fibrosis you non-deployable. I'm sorry to say that the Coast Guard is even stricter than all other branches. We have recruited close training camp for a few months and we had 3 classes of agent a year 1. The Academy is also to reduce the amount of people, let it

It does not matter if you can pass the fitness test, he has to do with the fact that you are sick, even just what you considered.
