Equal Sweetener

Posted on March 3, 2010.
Equal SweetenerWhat damage can equal sweetener and monosodium glutamate do to your body?

What is the best and safest sweetener to use?

MSG and Equal (aspartame) can be very damaging to health because they are neurotoxins. I like to use natural sweeteners like raw honey, maple syrup, and stevia extract. Stevia is a white powder from a plant that is sold in health food stores. It will not increase your blood sugar, but has a bit of an aftertaste.
Use less of all sweeteners will improve your health IMHO.
The Weston Price Foundation has very good articles on which we would like our ancestors and characteristics shared by all traditional diets (surprisingly, they are not low fat!). Check the links for more information.

In terms of well-controlled studies that pass scientific guidelines, there is no convincing studies of adverse effects of aspartame (Equal). There were obviously has effects on neurons poorly characterized in laboratory studies, but this has so far not been shown to have a practical impact on real people. Obviously, aspartame has been widely used, and there was no epidemic of brain cancer or brain damage (with the exception of the current crop of politicians, of course). In addition, it is clear he does not cross into the brain from the bloodstream, so there should be almost no reason to suspect that it has an effect on the brain, although there will always be people who assume otherwise.

MSG is an additive to many salty foods, but it is much less commonly used today. It is primarily salt of glutamic acid, which is actually an amino acid used to make proteins. Since this is an acid salt, it is actually slightly alkaline rather than acidic. However, since this is a sodium salt, which means it can cause problems with high blood pressure and fluid retention throughout the body. In recent decades, more aware of this problem has led to its use has declined in food. Although occasional use is safe, its routine use should be avoided because of its salt content.
