Reasons For Anaemia

Posted on February 9, 2010.
Reasons For AnaemiaWhat are two reasons for anemia in kidney dialysis patients?

The main reason is that patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease (aka renal failure) requiring dialysis have a reduced number of work units in the kidneys (nephrons) and then decreased kidney function that World 'They also have a low Erythropoetin (EPO) production leading to low RBC (Red Blood Cells) production and subsequent anemia.
Such patients may also have mechanical hemolytic anemia due to destruction of one percent of the small RBC in the dialyzer.
A certain degree of anemia can be induced by the mandatory use of anticoagulants (like heparin) during the procedure.

1. Because of erythropoietin in ESRD patients with low to stimulate bone marrow to produce red blood cells.

2. Hemolysis what happens with kidney failure. Red blood cells undergo hemolysis (destruction) due to the toxin retained when the kidneys have failed.
