Sports for people with a herniated disc back condition? I had a herniated disc a year ago. Sometime earlier this year, I tried to recover while playing basketball .. but the pain I experience in the back again. Can someone with experience in these things suggest what sports are still considered safe, and how I can graduate in any contact sports?
There always excluded from sport?
I have a goal of a marathon one day too!
The most important thing: Watch your weight. Excess weight can cause the lower activity of putting a huge strain on your vertebrae and discs.
Of course, starting with sports that involves less jumping. So, basketball is out of question to begin with. Soccer could be a little easier as a group game. Baseball with his swing might be a little hard too. What about water sports? Water polo (handball water) like a perfect fit. This is a group game, with much less pressure on your back. Swimming in general is good for your condition, and can ease back into other sports such as muscles grow stronger in your area back to better support your spine.
Also, try cycling. But choose your bike have a very good suspension, and avoid rough roads. This will also help you with marathon training: the least upper body exercise, and legs.
Hope things turn OK for you. If changes occur, go immediately to your doctor .. do not go away:)
I would like to see an orthopedic doctor know your limits. They can fix a herniated disc and you can be back to normal and achieve your goals.
