Thick Sticky Mucus

Thick Sticky MucusBronchitis and mucus

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi or air passages. (But then, if you knew anything about medical terminology at all, you've already thought cela.-Itis = inflammation of, as long as you have heard words like "lung" before, you're in the right general area). Usually bronchitis is caused by a virus that causes the lung portion to swell, making breathing difficult.
The body is an amazing thing, and it responds to situations such as redness and infection with other beautiful things, like the sticky mucus. Although this does not seem to be a plus for those of us coughing all day and night is actually the body's way of dealing with inflammation. Unfortunately, this makes it even more difficult to breathe through air passages that are already inflated.
The best way to get rid of bronchitis is to wait it out - to sleep, drink water, cough mucus (possibly using an expectorant) and reduced the smoke if you do. However, it can sometimes get more serious and require medical attention. If any of the following occurs, seek medical attention beyond Mucinex and orange juice

  • symptoms persist for more than a month
  • high fever or fatigue
  • you have had bronchitis several times (this may be a sign of acute bronchitis)
  • your feet are swollen
  • You are coughing up blood or mucus in bad taste (I'm not saying that you love and want to eat your mucus others, but if the taste is not normal and mucus-y, you should probably check into that it).

If the doctor considers it necessary, you can use an inhaler filled with steroids, which help reduce the swelling of the way it does for people with asthma.
